Working at a vineyard + Central Otago food showcase!

Back in 2020, I worked at two vineyards in Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. One was Judge Rock Wines, a boutique vineyard known for their organic pinot noirs. Another vineyard (now closed), is Aurum Wines which does a selection of natural wines.

My mornings began usually really early, at 6 am, with homemade granola and milk. Lunch was usually followed by avocado on sourdough toast.

Dinner was made by my kind hosts, vineyard owners and winemakers, Angela and Paul. Dinner on the first night was a fabulous roast chicken with Brussels sprouts and sweet potato.

During weekends, I often went out cycling to explore the heritage town Cromwell, and nearby shops and cafes. These were vintage cookbooks I found from a local bookstore.

You can’t beat a good lamington or ginger slice either!

Because I worked during the winter time, my main task was trimming the vines. It was tiring work, however, I was able to listen to podcasts during my time, surrounded by magnificent views.

Another iconic Central Otago snack is their cheese rolls, which includes sour cream, chives and onion rolled in bread, and baked until crispy and light. It is the perfect companion to a hot chocolate in winter time.

Pavlova, with whipped cream and berry sauce, is also a favorite.

Jimmy’s Cheese Pies are also a firm favorite, a good retro pie made from a family recipe since the 1950’s, with New Zealand meat and Colby cheese.

They also offer B&B accommodation on site, which I think is a great way to explore and experience the beauty of the Central Otago region in a quaint, secluded area.
